Haimy Assefa
Haimy Assefa is an Emmy-nominated, award winning documentary filmmaker and creative director committed to telling impactful stories with nuance and empathy.
She is the director of Black Birth, a documentary short exploring Black maternal health and motherhood. The film follows three expectant mothers, including Haimy, as they navigate the joys, fears, and complexities of Black motherhood. Black Birth world premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021 and aired on BET and BETher.
For the last decade, Haimy has been integral to digital media startups as well as legacy media companies, telling stories across platforms. She produced dozens of micro docs during her time at CNN’s Great Big Story before joining NBC Left Field, an experimental documentary unit, as a founding producer telling stories focused on social issues like identity, criminal justice, immigration, and activism. She has since produced and directed for the Netflix series Explained.
In 2021, Haimy served as interim Creative Director of video and multimedia at The Atlantic’s Re:Think.
